The first Methodist circuit rider to preach in the Ann Arbor area was John Baughman. Two years later, in 1827, five individuals organized themselves into a Methodist Society. In 1830, the Ann Arbor church was listed as an appointment of the Methodist Conference. The first dedicated building of the church was begun in 1837.
